Task Overview
Reading Passage
Information Cascade People often find themselves in situations in which they must choose between different options. In such cases, many people tend to observe the choices of others and then imitate those choices. They believe it is best to do what others are doing, even when it contradicts what they know to be true. When the decision of a few affects the behavior of a larger group, this is said to be due to an information cascade. Many people follow the decisions of a few, even when they believe a better option is available.

4.话题发展 The response does a decent job of explaining the concept of information cascade using the professor's example. However, there are a few inaccuracies in the details, such as mentioning a Thai restaurant instead of an Italian one. To improve topic development, make sure to accurately recount the details from the lecture and reading passage. Additionally, try to make clearer connections between the example and the concept of information cascade, emphasizing how people's decisions were influenced by others' choices in this situation.
5.语言使用Original: Information cascade is a tendency that people will imitate others' choice, and Professor uses an example to explain it. When he made choice between the Thai restaurant and French restaurant, he noticed that the Thai restaurant was of high ranking but was empty in it, and the French restaurant was of low ranking but was crowded in it. And he began to think that the guidebook may be wrong, the ranking may be not true, the French restaurant had a lot of people, so it must be very good. So he entered the French restaurant and found it actually very bad. But more people continued to come in the French restaurant because they all imitated others, and they thought that there are a lot of people eating in it, so it must be very good. And the Thai restaurant is always very empty because there are not a lot of people.
Corrected: The information cascade is a phenomenon where people tend to imitate others' choices. The professor illustrates this concept with an example. When deciding between an Italian restaurant and a French one, he noticed that the Italian restaurant had a high rating but was empty, while the French one had a low rating but was crowded. He began to doubt the guidebook's accuracy and assumed that the French restaurant must be better due to its popularity. After dining at the French restaurant, he found the food to be mediocre. However, more people continued to arrive at the French restaurant because they also followed others' choices, believing that its popularity indicated quality. Meanwhile, the Italian restaurant remained empty due to its lack of patrons. (在这个修改后的版本中,我们纠正了原文中的一些错误,例如将“泰国餐厅”改为“意大利餐厅”,并使用了更自然的语言表达。同时,我们还对句子结构和语法进行了调整,使其更加流畅。)
Revised Answer (140 words): The information cascade is a phenomenon where people tend to imitate others' choices, often leading to a chain reaction. The professor illustrates this concept with a personal example. When deciding between an Italian restaurant and a French one, he observed that the Italian restaurant had a high rating but was empty, while the French one had a low rating but was crowded. Doubting the guidebook's accuracy, he assumed that the French restaurant must be better due to its popularity. After dining there, he found the food to be mediocre. However, more people continued to arrive at the French restaurant because they also followed others' choices, believing that its popularity indicated quality. Meanwhile, the Italian restaurant remained empty due to its lack of patrons. This example clearly demonstrates how an information cascade can influence people's decisions based on the actions of others.

4.话题发展 The speaker's response is coherent and well-organized, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples. However, there is room for improvement in topic development. To enhance the response, the speaker could provide more details about the professor's experience, such as mentioning the guidebook ratings and how the professor initially trusted the guidebook but changed his mind based on the crowd at the French restaurant. Additionally, the speaker could emphasize how this example illustrates the concept of an information cascade by explaining that people continued to choose the French restaurant based on its popularity, even though it had a lower rating in the guidebook. By incorporating these suggestions, the speaker's topic development will be stronger and more effective.

5.语言使用Original: Well, an information cascade is a concept mentioned in the reading passage, which means many people follow the decisions of a few even when they believe a better option is available. In the lecture, the professor used his own experience as an example. Last week, he went to a brand new city for him and wanted to get some dinner. He had a map and the review of it is opposite to his own feelings. He firstly he go to the Italian restaurant, but it's empty. And then he go to French restaurant across the street and there are more people, there were more people here. So he started to question the review of the map and the dinner, however, the dinner is not that good, but still so many people rushed in this restaurant and get some meal. But when they went back to the Italian restaurant, there were still not many people.
Corrected: An information cascade, as mentioned in the reading passage, occurs when many people follow the decisions of a few even when they believe a better option is available. In the lecture, the professor shared his own experience as an example. Last week, he visited a new city and wanted to have dinner. He had a guidebook with restaurant reviews that contradicted his observations. Initially, he went to an Italian restaurant which was empty. Then he went to a French restaurant across the street that was crowded. He began questioning the guidebook's review and decided to dine at the French restaurant; however, the food was mediocre despite its popularity. When he passed by the Italian restaurant later on, it still had few customers. (在这个修改后的版本中,我们修正了一些语法错误,例如使用了正确的时态和词汇,并使句子更加简洁。)
Revised (140 words): An information cascade, as mentioned in the reading passage, occurs when many people follow the decisions of a few even when they believe a better option is available. In the lecture, the professor shared his own experience as an example. He visited a new city and wanted to have dinner. With a guidebook containing restaurant reviews, he initially went to an Italian restaurant which was empty. Then, he noticed a crowded French restaurant across the street. Questioning the guidebook's review, he decided to dine at the French restaurant; however, the food was mediocre despite its popularity. When he passed by the Italian restaurant later on, it still had few customers. This example illustrates how people tend to follow others' choices, creating an information cascade, even if they have access to different information suggesting a better option.
