IELTS Registration: Find a Test Centre and Book the Right Test
Start with the test your university or immigration route requires. Then choose an official centre, an available date and the accepted ID you will bring. Before paying, check the format, venue, result deadline and local change policy.
Official booking guidance checked 7 October 2026. Live seats, fees and local rules come from your provider at booking.
Which IELTS test should you register for?
The official IELTS booking guide says to check entry requirements before choosing. A convenient date is no use if you book a test your recipient does not accept.
| Your purpose | Test to check | Before booking |
|---|---|---|
| University or higher education; professional registration | IELTS Academic | Read the programme’s overall and section-band requirements and accepted delivery formats. |
| Work or migration | IELTS General Training, when required by your route | Check the authority’s test requirement. Do not substitute Academic just because it is available. |
| UK visa application | The IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills test specified by your route | Confirm the exact test and level; use the locator’s UKVI Approved filter where applicable. |
Read the official test-type guidance and your recipient’s requirements together. If they are unclear, ask the recipient before paying.
Find IELTS exam centres and available test dates
- Open the IELTS test-centre locator. Select your country or territory, then your city.
- Use the UKVI Approved filter if your application needs it. The locator also has a One Skill Retake filter; the centre must confirm availability.
- Open the centre or provider’s booking information. Select your test and the delivery options offered there, then inspect its calendar.
- Compare the actual venue, date and appointment information. A city name alone does not tell you how far you will travel or whether Speaking is scheduled separately.
For the United States, choose United States in the same official locator, then the city you can reach. If you plan to test in Boston, Houston or another US city, check its live listing and confirm the venue with the provider. Centres and sessions can change.
No date appears?
Check the selected test type and format, try another reachable city, or contact the listed centre. Do not assume every centre offers every test. A calendar date or an enquiry is not a confirmed booking; save the provider’s confirmation after completing registration.
IELTS registration, step by step
The British Council’s current guide describes choosing a test, mode, country, city and date, then creating a profile with your email. Local requirements may differ. Use the provider linked by your chosen official centre for IDP IELTS or British Council registration.
- Prepare your documents. British Council asks for a photo or scan of a passport or national identity card valid both when you book and on test day, written parent or guardian consent if you are under 18, and a valid payment method. Its guide explicitly says requirements vary by country: confirm which ID your location accepts.
- Select the exact test and format. British Council lists IELTS on computer, computer with Writing on paper, and IELTS Online where available. Do not treat “on computer” at a centre as an at-home test. Check your recipient accepts the option before selecting it.
- Choose the session and enter your details. Use your accepted ID as the reference for personal details. Review spelling and document information before proceeding. Check the confirmation for the venue and any separate Speaking appointment.
- Review the local total and terms. Check the amount and currency, accepted payment method, transfer and cancellation rules, and any local conditions. Our IELTS fee guide provides context; the amount shown by the provider is what you must verify before payment.
- Save the confirmation. British Council says its confirmation email contains an IELTS Reference Number and test type, format, dates and locations. Keep that email and payment receipt, check the details, and note how to access the provider’s portal.
If you need access arrangements, contact the test centre in advance. Arrange support before choosing a session; do not leave the request until test day.
Before you pay: IELTS booking checklist
Work through each item using your recipient’s requirements and the provider’s booking page. If one is unresolved, check it before committing to a date.
Avoid the mistakes that make booking expensive
An application deadline is not your test deadline
Work backwards: when must the recipient receive your score, how will it receive it, and what result-release timing applies to your selected format? Allow time for score delivery and, if needed, another attempt. For example, if a university needs a score by 1 December, choosing a 1 December test because it has seats does not solve the deadline. This is a planning example, not a provider booking rule.
A low fee does not fix the wrong test
Check the exact test and delivery mode first, then compare local costs. Choosing a different format or General Training instead of a required Academic test can leave you with a result your recipient cannot use.
A payment attempt is not the confirmation
If a charge appears but no confirmation arrives, check your email and provider portal, then contact the provider with the transaction details. Resolve the first booking before making another payment.
Do not carry a refund rule across countries
Keep the terms attached to your own booking. IELTS directs candidates to local cancellation, transfer and refund rules. Start with the official policy guidance and your centre; our fee guide explains why the amounts and conditions vary.
Turn your booked date into a practice plan
Write down the overall band and each section minimum your recipient needs. Try a practice set, record the mistakes you make, and spend the days before your test on those skills. Start with a Reading passage or a Speaking prompt rather than repeating the registration process.

IELTS registration questions
How do I register for IELTS?
Check the test your receiving institution requires, then use the official IELTS test-centre locator to choose a country, city and provider. Select a test type, available format and date in the provider’s booking system, enter your details, check the local ID and payment requirements, and save the confirmation.
How do I find an IELTS exam centre near me?
Use the official IELTS test-centre locator, filter by country and city, and open a centre’s booking information. Check the test type and actual venue before paying. The nearest centre may not offer the format, UKVI approval or date you need.
Where can I see available IELTS exam dates?
Available dates appear in the provider’s booking calendar after you choose your country, city, test type and format. A general list of dates does not confirm a seat. Check the available session in the booking system.
What ID do I need for IELTS registration?
British Council’s global booking guide asks for a photo or scan of a passport or national identity card valid at booking and on test day, but explicitly says local requirements vary. Confirm which document your chosen country and provider accept before booking.
Can I register for IELTS with IDP or British Council?
Use the official IELTS centre listing to find the provider available at your chosen location. The British Council guide links to its registration system; IELTS also links to IDP IELTS. Follow your provider’s local booking instructions and check the required test and format.
Can I change my IELTS date after booking?
Check the terms shown for your country, provider and test type. Transfer deadlines, fees and cancellation refunds are not universal. Keep your booking reference and use the provider’s portal or centre contact to ask about a change.
