LMU Munich Acceptance Rate: Admissions Statistics and English Requirements

LMU Munich does not publish an acceptance rate or application totals. Most of its programmes admit every applicant who meets the entry requirements; restricted programmes admit by school-leaving grade. LMU enrolled 7,451 new first-semester students in academic year 2025.

German public universities do not select students the way US or UK universities do. At LMU, programmes without admission restrictions accept every applicant with a recognised university entrance qualification and the required language level, while programmes with local admission restrictions (numerus clausus, or NC) rank applicants by their final school grade. LMU publishes its student numbers and the grade cut-off for each restricted programme, but no applications, offers or acceptance rate. This page shows those official figures and the language requirements.

What the numbers mean

Because most LMU programmes have no admission restriction, an acceptance rate would say little: in those programmes every applicant who holds a recognised university entrance qualification and proves the required German level is admitted. Admission restrictions are set each year; for winter 2025/26 they applied to programmes such as Business Administration, Psychology, Law, Communication Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences and several computer science degrees.

In restricted programmes, LMU first reserves advance quotas — including 5% of places for international applicants from outside the EU — and allocates the rest by grade: 30% on the final school grade alone and 70% through a supplementary procedure that at LMU also uses the grade (plus an aptitude test for Psychology). The cut-offs above are the grades of the last applicants admitted. LMU notes they say little about future chances, and they do not apply to non-EU applicants without a German school-leaving qualification, who compete in their own quota.

LMU's bachelor's programmes are taught in German, so undergraduate applicants prove German, not English, proficiency — for example the DSH 2 exam or TestDaF level 4 in every section. TOEFL and IELTS matter for LMU's English-taught master's and doctoral programmes, where each programme sets its own minimum.

LMU had 52,658 students in winter semester 2025/26, 11,658 of them international, and 7,451 new first-semester students across summer 2025 and winter 2025/26, 2,919 of them international.

FAQ

What is the LMU Munich acceptance rate?

LMU does not publish one, and it does not publish how many people apply or receive offers. Most of its programmes admit every applicant who meets the entry requirements; programmes with admission restrictions admit by school-leaving grade. For winter 2025/26 the cut-off was 1.9 for Business Administration and 2.7 for Law on the German scale, where 1.0 is best.

Is LMU Munich hard to get into?

It depends on the programme. Unrestricted programmes admit all qualified applicants, while restricted programmes can be very competitive: Psychology needed 1.54 (with an aptitude test) and Business Administration 1.9 in winter 2025/26. International applicants also need a school qualification that gives access to German universities and proof of German for bachelor's programmes.

Does LMU Munich accept international students?

Yes. In academic year 2025, 2,919 of LMU's 7,451 new first-semester students were international. In restricted programmes 5% of places are reserved for applicants from outside the EU.

Does LMU Munich require TOEFL or IELTS?

Not for bachelor's programmes, which are taught in German and require German proficiency such as DSH 2 or TestDaF level 4 in all sections. English-taught master's programmes set their own English minimums: the Master's Program in Economics, for example, asks for TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS Academic 6.5.

What TOEFL score does LMU Munich require for a master's?

Each English-taught programme sets its own. The Master's Program in Economics requires a TOEFL iBT total of at least 80 or IELTS 6.5. It states the TOEFL minimum on the 0–120 scale and has not published a minimum on the 1–6 scale used since January 2026.
