What the numbers mean

Oxford's report counts applications made through UCAS by the 15 October deadline. Its '2025' figures cover the UCAS cycle in which applications were made by 15 October 2024, mostly for entry in October 2025. An offer is usually conditional on exam grades, so more offers are made than there are places: in 2025, 3,891 offers led to 3,302 students admitted.

Selection is a two-stage process. Oxford says it typically aims to interview three candidates for every place, shortlisting on centrally agreed criteria for each course, and around a third of interviewees then receive an offer. Admissions tests, written work, interviews, references and personal statements are considered together, and you cannot apply to Oxford and Cambridge in the same year.

Domicile makes a large difference. In 2025 UK applicants received offers at 21.0%, EU applicants at 7.3% and non-EU international applicants at 10.3%. Oxford states it does not operate quotas by nationality or domicile, except in Medicine, where the government caps the number of students with international fee status.

Rates also vary a lot by course. Economics & Management had 18.8 applicants per place across 2023–2025, followed by Computer Science (14.8) and Biomedical Sciences (12.0), so the university-wide figure understates how competitive the busiest courses are.

FAQ

What is the University of Oxford acceptance rate?

For 2025 entry Oxford received 23,329 applications and made 3,891 offers, an offer rate of 16.7%. 3,302 students were admitted, 14.2% of applicants. The offer rate was 16.4% for 2024 entry and 16.0% for 2023 entry.

What is Oxford's acceptance rate for international students?

Oxford splits its figures into UK, EU and non-EU applicants. For 2025 entry non-EU applicants received 784 offers from 7,600 applications (10.3%) and EU applicants 101 offers from 1,389 applications (7.3%), against 21.0% for UK applicants. Non-EU students made up 18.5% of those admitted.

What is Oxford's acceptance rate for US students?

Oxford publishes country figures as three-year totals of applications and admitted students, not offers. From 2023 to 2025, 2,891 applications came from the United States and 202 students from the US were admitted, about 7.0% of applicants.

What is the Oxford acceptance rate for Economics and Management?

Economics & Management is Oxford's most oversubscribed large course, with 18.8 applicants per place across 2023–2025 (all domiciles). For UK-domiciled applicants over the same three years, 188 offers were made from 2,428 applications, an offer rate of 7.7%. Oxford does not publish an all-domicile offer count for the course in this report.

Do Oxford colleges have different acceptance rates?

Oxford publishes college-level applications, offers and admissions only for UK-domiciled applicants, and colleges routinely reallocate candidates: around a third of successful candidates get their offer from a college they did not choose. A college's apparent rate therefore says little about your own chances, and Oxford does not publish an overall rate for international applicants by college.

Is it harder to get into Oxford or Cambridge?

On published offer rates, Oxford is more selective: for 2025 entry Oxford made offers to 16.7% of applicants (3,891 of 23,329), while Cambridge made offers to 21.7% (4,893 of 22,513). For applicants from outside the UK the figures were 10.3% (Oxford, non-EU) and 14.7% (Cambridge, all non-Home applicants). You can only apply to one of the two in a given year.

What IELTS or TOEFL score does Oxford require?

Oxford requires IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each component. It does not accept TOEFL iBT tests taken from 21 January 2026 while it reviews the new test format; tests taken up to 20 January 2026 are accepted at 110 overall (Listening 22, Reading 24, Speaking 25, Writing 24). Offer holders must meet the requirement by 31 July of the year they receive their offer.
